Larry Niven

September 1, 1997
This month, our we're featuring science fiction author Larry Niven. His many works in expanding the boundaries of the sci fi genre have benefited both readers and writers alike.

The Man
Famed author Larry Niven, born Laurence van Cott Niven on April 30, 1938, in Los Angeles, California, graduated in 1962 with a B.A. in Mathematics and a minor in Psychology from Washburn University, Kansas. He completed one year of graduate work in mathematics at UCLA before quitting school to write. From his first publication, "The Coldest Place" for If in 1964, he set his mark on the science fiction field. He won four short-fiction HUGOS, and both Hugo and NEBULA in 1971 for "Ringworld" (1970), a capstone title in his seminal Tales of Known Space sequence, which he began with his first publication and has been expanding ever since. He continues to write, although he utilizes collaborators more and more in his recent works.
